Typical Radio Sport breakfast hour:
Is it just me or does Radio Sport seem to be struggling for staff? Going from the pretty-damn-good-actually Martin Devlin to Tony Veitch to currently having D'Arcy Waldegrave [who isn't that flash but works his butt off and knows his motorsport] and Mark Richardson [38-year-old mid-life crisis jock-trying-to-act-like-a-teenager and completely unable to analyse any sport other than cricket] kinda shows this to begin with. But then what happens when Brendan Telfer is on extended sick leave and your breakfast hosts go on holiday?
You call in the big gun. Matt Gunn. I've been led to wonder many a time how this boy still has a job. He seems to try to be like Paul Henry crossed with Michael Laws, but just comes across as a cock. I don't listen to the drive show, specifically because he's on it. I got sick of his 'broadcasting abilities' in the first week I tuned in - asking for correspondence then shooting down the person by calling them an 'idiot' and 'dickhead' isn't funny or appealing.
But now I've got no choice. I've had the misfortune of having to listen to him this week [It's my job to listen, not one of those 'I can't be bothered changing stations' situations], ridiculing many, many sports. Well Gunn, obviously you haven't learnt the first lesson of sports broadcasting.
Every sport has a fan. For example; a lot of people are excited about the David Tua v Shane Cameron bout. So what purpose does ripping it to shreds serve?
If you can stand to, navigate to his profile on the poorly laid-out Radio Sport website [honestly, the NZ media industry has a lot to learn about NEW media...] you can see his favourite food is 'any wog dish' and that he's actually 'trained as a journalist'. Radio Sport hires racist journalists? Good job. Not only that, but journalists who know how to respond to criticism from their target demographic!
I'd say to give him a listen during the morning tomorrow, but don't waste your time. Surely New Zealand is producing sports broadcasters better than Gunn, Miles Davis and Goran Paladin? Or maybe they just don't want to work for one of the worst stations in New Zealand. Fair call.

Wednesday, 22 Apr 2009 — noizyGah, Devlin interviewed Rikki Herbert last night, and the first thing he did was make the NZ and Phoenix football coach feel uncomfortable by playing up the latter's lack of indie music cred (the intro to the interview was the Clean's "Tally Ho!" -- 'One you'd be familiar with then Rikki?', 'Uh, no, actually, never heard it before in my life.')

Thursday, 23 Apr 2009 — SPORTSFREAK (not verified)Radio Sport is a tired old format with very few decent hosts, you only have to listen to ESPN Sports Radio that runs all night till 6am to hear what well prepared and researched sport radio really sounds like.
Do what I do - change the dial and play music.

Friday, 17 Jul 2009 — Anonymous (not verified)Surely Mark Watson must be challenging Gunn from RadioSport's Alpha Dickhead award? He seems to hate: NZ, NZers, team sports, teams sports that are popular in NZ, NZers who play team sports, women, women who play team sports, and women who play team sports popular in NZ. That about covers it, I think. I'm sick of hearing about how bloody wonderful he thinks he his and about his equally wonderful life overseas, of how his opinions are really 'ours' and 'yours', why multisporters and cyclists are so vastly superior to anyone spat up by team sports, how everything American is fantastic and everything Kiwi is crap, and wondering just how many bits of cliche-ridden bullshit he can squeeze into one sentence. Even by the misogynistic, homophobic, narcissistic standards that seem to be a self-imposed benchmark amongst RadioSport 'presenters', he's still in danger of getting the bends if he ever tried scrabbling toward the surface.

Wednesday, 28 Apr 2010 — Anonymous (not verified)Radio sport has gone way down hill. I now pick and choose who I listen to.
I use to listen whenever I could, however the current presenters all have some hidden agenda. If they are not getting something in their pockets from the sport then they just abuse it or totally ignore it.
No longer tune in to D'Arcy or Richardson. Stopped listening to Golightly ages ago. Switch stations whenever Lose or Deaker are on. I can put up with Matt for 20 minutes (ads included) and then switch off. Tune into Davis as its a funny comedy show NOT a sports show.
Where is Martin
